Gourlay’s Pharmacy has been part of the Bow Valley since 1923 when Hugh Gourlay made Banff home and opened a drug store on Banff Ave. Alma is proud to carry on the locally owned and independent pharmacy legacy in Canmore and serve the residents of this special mountain community!

VACCINATIONS
COVID VACCINE UPDATE: Effective April 15, 2024, the following groups are eligible to receive an additional dose of the XBB1.5 vaccine. The interval between the additional dose is at least 6 months since the previous dose or 3 months after a Covid infection.
Individuals 65 years of age and older
Individuals 6 months of age and older with certain immunocompromising conditions
First Nations, Métis and Inuit individuals 6 months of age and older
Adults 18 years of age and older who reside in seniors congregate care living settings
Covid vaccines are covered by Alberta Health Services with a valid Alberta Health Care number. SEASONAL FLU SHOTS
Seasonal flu shots are administered October through March each year. Official start date may vary from year to year.
Flu vaccines are covered by Alberta Health Services with a valid Alberta Health Care number.
Facts about the flu:
The flu is caused by a flu virus and spreads easily from one person to another
The virus spreads in “droplets” when you sneeze, cough, and talk.
Unwashed hands spread the virus to your mouth, eyes, or nose when you touch them.
The flu can be more dangerous for children, the elderly, and those with health conditions.

Tips to lower your chances of getting the flu:
Protect yourself with the vaccine each year.
Follow the steps for proper hand washing with soap and water.
Cough or sneeze into a clean tissue, or cover your mouth and nose with your elbow.

Our skilled pharmacists are equipped to conduct comprehensive assessments for various minor ailments and conditions. Following a thorough evaluation, if a prescription is deemed necessary and falls within our scope (excluding narcotics or controlled substances), our pharmacist can prescribe the appropriate medication. It's important to note, not all assessments will result in a prescription, ensuring that only suitable cases are treated with medication. This service aims to provide you with timely and effective healthcare solutions, right within your community. We may advise you to see another more suitable care provider. YOUR APPOINTMENT
What to expect with a travel clinic consultation:
We will send you a Travel Risk Assessment form prior to the appointment. Please complete this form and bring it with you. We do have access to NetCare, which will show vaccines administered in Alberta. If you have any other vaccine records, please bring them to the appointment.
Plan to book an appointment 6-8 weeks before your travel. Some vaccines require multiple doses or multiple weeks to become effective.
Please give yourself at least 1 hour for the travel clinic appointment.
We will email you the travel information and any travel related maps discussed during the consultation.
Vaccines, Medications, and Recommendations
During the appointment we will review your medical and vaccine history and discuss potential travel related concerns, based on the given itinerary. We are able to provide you with a prescription for any of the recommended vaccines or travel related medications (ie. malaria prophylaxis, traveller's diarrhea, altitude sickness).
We can also administer recommended vaccines at this time. We will schedule additional appointments for vaccine boosters as required.
TRAVEL CLINIC FEES
Travel Health is not covered by Alberta Health Care, therefore consultation fees are an out of pocket expense.
Certified by the International Society of Travel Medicine, our travel-certified pharmacist will give you information on how to stay healthy on your trip.

The consultation fees are: $70 per person; $60 per person for a couple; $50 per person for a family of 3-4 people. Resort Travel: $35 per person. Yellow fever consultation only: $35 per person.

Travel Health Kit
A travel health kit is important no matter where you travel. We want to ensure that it contains enough supplies to prevent illness, handle minor injuries and illnesses, and manage pre-existing medical conditions for longer than the duration of your trip.

Tips for travelling with medication:
Bring an extra supply of medication and medical supplies (ie. needles or syringes for injections).
Keep all medication in its original, labelled container.
Take a copy of your prescription or medication print out from the pharmacy.
Keep medication in your carry-on luggage.

Hand washing:
Clean hands may be one of the most important things you and your family can do to stay healthy, at home and when you travel. (Read more about Hand washing and staying healthy)
Food and water safety:
The most common illnesses among travellers are generally caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, or viruses. Always take precautions with food and water to avoid getting sick. (Read more about Food and water safety).
Tips to eat safely:
Eat well-cooked food that is still hot and steaming.
Eat fruits and vegetables you can peel yourself, such as bananas.
Wash your hands before you peel fruits and vegetables.
Do not eat the peels.
Do not eat leafy vegetables like lettuce that are hard to clean.
Do not drink unpasteurized milk and dairy products.
Do not eat shellfish from any water you think may be polluted or contaminated with raw sewage.
Do not eat raw or undercooked meat or seafood.
Tips to drink safely:
Drink commercially bottled water with a sealed lid.
Boil any un-bottled water for one minute at a rolling boil before you drink it.
Use ice made from bottled or treated water.

We “compound” or “make” medication from scratch in our lab located in the Canmore store.
We make medication because some patients have specific needs that can’t be met by manufactured medication.

Compression socks can relieve the pain of tired, achy legs; help your legs feel more energized and help prevent and treat a variety of symptoms associated with poor circulation. Compressions socks apply a gradient pressure on the limbs, this squeezes the vein walls together to encourage circulation and prevent blood from pooling. TRAVELLER’S DIARRHEA
20% to 50% of international travellers will get traveller’s diarrhea (TD).
A vaccine is available; visit our travel clinic before your trip.
Know before you go:
Treatment for TD is available; talk to a pharmacist about which medications to take with you and when to use them.
TD is caused by bacteria (including E. Coli), parasites (including Giardia), and viruses in food and water.
TD spreads from contaminated food and water, or direct contact with an infected person with poor cleanliness.

HEPATITIS A AND B
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is the most common travel disease you can prevent with a vaccine.
Visit our travel clinic before your trip to talk to a pharmacist about the vaccine.
Know before you go:
The infection is caused by the Hepatitis A virus and it affects your liver.
The virus spreads through food and water contaminated with stool or feces from a person infected with hepatitis A (even in very small amounts)
Hepatitis A is a concern everywhere, but is more common in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and Mexico.
It’s a concern even with short stays, in city areas and in luxury hotels.

Hepatitis B
Because of how it spreads, it is a concern everywhere.
A vaccine is available.
Visit our travel clinic before your trip to talk to a pharmacist about the vaccine.
Know before you go:
The infection is caused by the Hepatitis B virus and it affects your liver.
The virus spreads easily from one person to another through blood and bodily fluids infected with hepatitis B virus.
The virus most commonly spreads through these activities:
Unprotected sex
Injection drug use
Blood transfusions
Unsterilized medical/dental equipment (in tattooing, acupuncture, body piercing)
Sharing toothbrushes and razors
Health care work with blood and patients infected hepatitis B virus

Tips for preventing hepatitis B include:

Protect yourself if you participate in the activities identified as risky for Hepatitis B infection.
MALARIA
Know before you go:
There are several anti-malarial medications that each work in different places; know which one to take.
Malaria is caused by parasites carried by mosquitoes.
It spreads through mosquito bites.
It’s most common in sub-tropical and tropical areas of the world.
Everyone is at risk in areas with mosquitoes carrying these parasites.
Your greatest risk is:
In rural areas
From sunset to sunrise
During and after the rainy seasons

Tips to reduce your risk infection with malaria include:
Take the right anti-malarial medication for the areas you plan to visit.
Stay in city areas.
Do not travel during or after the rainy season.
Cover bare skin.
Wear light coloured clothing.
Use mosquito repellant (DEET) on bare skin.
Sleep under a bed net.
Stay in an air-conditioned room not open to the outdoors.
Stay indoors from sunset to sunrise when mosquitos are in their highest numbers and biting.
TYPHOID FEVER
Typhoid fever is common in countries where drinking water and food cleanliness are poor.
The vaccine gives you partial protection from infection.
It does not give you 100% protection.

Typhoid fever is an infection caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi.
The bacteria spreads from the feces or urine of an infected person.
The bacteria spreads to you through food and water contaminated with the bacteria.

Gourlay’s Pharmacy has been part of the Bow Valley since 1923 when Hugh Gourlay made Banff home and opened a drug store on Banff Avenue. The pharmacy stayed in the Gourlay’s family until 1989, when the store was sold to Peter Eshenko and Randy Maclean. A second Gourlay’s location was opened in Canmore in 1994, when Peter and Randy partnered with Darren Belik.Alma Steyn was honoured to carry on the legacy of Gourlay’s Clinic Pharmacy in Canmore when she bought the store from the 3 partners in 2021. Alma and the pharmacy team are committed to continue serving the Bow Valley community with the highest standards of care.
